La Siesta Bowls Club
The La Siesta Bowls Club
Club Report week ending 28 June with Steve Hibberd
Bienvenido a senores a la cronica del club de bolas de La Siesta por esta semana.  Following last weeks pathetic attempt, club Presidente Ron Sheldon has kindly corrected the opening Spanish style greeting - thanks for that Ron.

Now for the result of the week.  Going into last Fridays Hurricane League fixture against Greenlands Glosters, the Hornets sat next to bottom, whilst their opponents were seemingly cruising their way to the title - sitting 5 points clear at the top with a game in hand.  So, to win on 4 rinks and take the overall shot difference in a 10-4 victory, was certainly a job well done.  Here's our happy hornets:  S Jordan, G Richardson, T Worth 19-18.  F Kay, T Baylis, A Barton 18-15.  S Millward, R Millward, V Moore 22-17.  H Clarke, M Hunter, G Seaman 19-16.

Unfortunately, the scores were reversed when the Wasps visited Greenlands to take on the Gladiators in the Spitfire league, for a 3rd v 4th place contest.  Reading like a who’s who of green bowling, the Gladiators certainly had their big guns on show, and deserved their 10-4 victory.  Well done to our 2 winning rinks:  J Gardiner, S Hibberd, B Gardiner  25-11.  P Barber, P Rhodes, H Rhodes  22-19.

La Marina was the venue for the Kings cup team.  Not good news I'm afraid, for only the rinks team of A Barton, I Goodsell, S Hibberd and D Livesey (19-12), scored any points, as we lost the game 9-3.  After a few weeks inactivity, the Princes cup team (this week in the form of trips), got back to winning ways.   With games in hand, J Gardiner, J Cooper and I Kenyon (13-11) have pushed us back into the role of titleship contenders.

It was finals day for both club leagues.  As all the top teams won, it remained status quo, meaning that the team of P Baylis, R Millward, S Hibberd and K Parker finished 2 points clear of J Murphy, L Rawson and R Sheldon, to win the Tues drawn trips.  But in the Thurs handicap league, it was pretty damn close.  Only 2 shots separated eventual winners, H Rhodes and A&R Heath, from runners up J Johnson, J Mullarkey and B Fraser.  Whilst on the subject of club events, here's a little taster of forthcoming events.  Starting on Tues 28 Jul, with a 5.30 for 6 start, the new Kates Newsagents league starts.  Then 2 days later, with an nice early 9 for 9.30 start, a new league consisting of 2 sets of 7 ends starts.  Fancy a nice little trip out to the Murcian countryside?  You do!  Then why not put your name on the availability sheet for the friendly match against Mazarron on Sat 5 Sep (it is hoped that a coach will be booked for the trip).

On chicken and egg day, Les Rawson, put aside the disappointment of finishing runner up the previous day, by taking home a nice tasty bird (the feathered kind you understand!!).  Eric Patching won the plonk, whilst Jim Clarke finished at the bottom of the pile, but can now go to work (or whatever) on an egg.

San Luis were the opponents for last week Premier 20 matches.  At home, only the pairs team of A Heath and J Cooper (35-10) won their match.  Away, we faired slightly better.  J Ball and D Livesely won the pairs 18-14, and A Barton, M Hunter and P Barber likewise the trips, meaning we lost overall 6 points to 10.

The egg cup challenge reached the penultimate week.  La Siesta beat San Luis on all 6 rinks, implying that now we have won the prestigious egg cup, next weeks final round can be enjoyed in a relaxed atmosphere, before tucking into a tasty barbie at San Luis.

No SOAH this week folks, whilst I carry out research into some poor unsuspecting Hoopoes (they love it really!).  One militant member is adamant that if written about, then I would be sorry.  Iris, what's that they say about red rag to a bull?  Have you heard about a travelling Hoopoe, when on visiting an away green was heard to say, "I don't mind where I play, as long as it's not rink 7".  To which a bemused colleague replied, "but Ivan, there are only 6 rinks here" (or words to that effect).

La Siesta bowls club invite everyone to use their facilities.  For further information, please phone owners Jim or Lyn Hudson on 690 190 523.
